I want to build a water feature to maximise on the sound of crashing water. Our patio area backs on to neighbours with children and I would appreciate some background noise to block out the din when I sit out there in the summer. The feature would be switched off when we are not outside, I am not that anti-social. I already have a good size pump and could excavate if necessary, but a self contained design would be good, I just want a good waterfall sound.

Well you'll need water falling into water, then. Spalshing water onto stones will not be very noisy. That means you'll need a pool or pond.

Alternatively, buy a BBC effects CD and play that on a loop. Seriously, I did this last summer - I bought one with sounds of nature - you know, cicadas chirruping just like in the movies. Really atmospheric when sitting outside. Anyway, I digress. Get one with a waterfall sound on it (Niagara Falls would be good). You could even go the whole hog and install those outdoor speakers for a permanent fix.

what do you call "good size" pump?

Basicaly the wider the water and higher it can go the noiser it will be, and yes it needs to be in a sump

a specialist nozzle will also help (since you can get ones that suck in air to make the water forthy / foamy)

you should also consider this

One theme park has its water fall amplified with microphone amp and speakers.

Over the top ? maybe but at least you could adjust level to suit noise level of little ones next door.
