Hello all, I hope someone can help with the issue I am having.

Built a hardwood coffee table top from reclaimed hardwood pallets.

Everything was going well until I applied a coat yacht varnish to protect the wood.

The majority of the varnish dried as normal but on the red pallet wood remained tacky and would not dry.

I left it for two weeks and even moved it to a warm room for a week to no avail.

I then bit the bullet cleaned off the tacky varnish with white spirit and sanded it all down again.

I then tried a 50/50 mix of yacht varnish and white spirit, but the same issue has occurred.

I believe there is a reaction between something in the red coloured wood, sap maybe and the varnish.

Can anyone recommend some sort of clear sealer for the red coloured wood prior to revarnishing.

Any help is very gratefully received.

Regards

Glenn

Slow drying or retarded drying is your problem it would appear

You have either applied the top coat before the lower coat has dried or there was something on top of that sticky area ...grease , grime , thinners etc that was sealed in by your top coat and keeps reacting or .....as you say ....its something within that red wood itself

Possible solutions are in the link I have sent you and there will be plenty online I am sure

I hope this helps

How about getting it all as much as you can , putting on a couple of coatings of shellac sanding sealer to lock it in then waxing it of putting on an acrylic oil ? ....just ideas, not really my area

A French polisher or furniture restorer would be your best contact

Hi Michealangelo, thanks for your responses , I have removed the sticky varnish from the effected areas , I will then apply a very small oamount of hard wax oil to see if that dries if it should , if not then i will purchase some shellac sanding sealer and sand the entire top off again !.

Thanks for all your help
