I am thinking about getting some block paving to replace and expand an existing drive but looking around the local streets the block paving doesn't seem to take long before it starts to discolour and fade. What is the best fade resistant colour and are some types of bricks better than others?

The majority will be cheap concrete blocks. They fade and if left , expose a nasty pebble effect. Look for clay pavers, they wont fade. The downsides are they cost more, and can allow for algae or moss to grow (whereas cement does a better job of killing it)

Clay pavers every time!!!!!!

We had our drive with Clay pavers 12 years ago, and only last week someone who came round thought we had had it done in the past year.

Advantages

Do NOT fade at all
Do not absorb oil from old cars leaking (you have to scrub, but it will come off)
I find the small amounts of moss that does grow, enhances the appearance, although it can be easily removed with a power washer (although do it on a hot day so you can re sand after)
If you keep some spares, if any do break you can replace them and they will be the same colour and not notice. This is not the case with concrete pavers as they fade after a few months of sun (which may amount to several years in the UK!)
Clay pavers are a natural product.

Disadvantages

Cannot use a block splitter, have to do cuts by hand so hire a good table disc cutter with water feed to reduce dust
Slightly more expensive.

We are moving next year and need the new bungalow paved with about 60sqm. We will absolutely be using Clays again...

Sorry, but concrete pavers look awful after a few years.......yes they are slightly easier to put down, which is why most firms will not even give you the option of clays
