I have a broadband connection to my PC through a network card. Then another network card in the same pc, wired to a laptop with what everyone says is the right sort of wire. Have made files "shared" but Norton (Internet security + antivirus installed on both computers) is getting in the way and not letting files be seen. Can anyone tell me where to go and what to do?

I'll be very surprised if Norton isn't preventing internet access from the laptop too, bit I haven't got quite thaat far yet.

Hi Chris

First, does the network behave if you switch off NIS?

Can you describe the full layout, starting from the broadband modem?

Is the 'correct bit of wire' a crossover patch cable?

How are you allocating IP addresses to your machines?

Can you ping each machine from every other machine?

Can you access the shares using the IPaddress as opposed to the machine name (START>RUN then type \\ipaddress and press ENTER)?
