Just went to move some stuff from a corner of the dining room to find the carpet, and the stuff on it, sodden. The wall is damp too. There are old mould marks from a previous problem (blocked downpipe) but I thought that had been rectified. Too big a job for me but anyone any ideas who I should contact? General builder? Insurance? How do I go about drying out the wall? And I'm guessing the carpet will need to come out because it's wet and stinks of damp. Thank you in advance

You need to investigate why the wall is damp.
Is down to a leak, blocked pipe, render pointing, guttering or rising damp.
Once that has been diagnosed, only then would you know which trade to bring in to repair.

Thank you! I THINK it was due to a blocked down pipe, full of leaves, but it seems a bit of a harsh reaction to have a wet carpet because of that. I'm guessing insurance wouldn't touch that because they'll just say I should have made sure the leaves were cleared. Would a leaf blockage have such a dramatic effect, do you think, or might there be a hole in the down pipe thing/hopper too which would exacerbate the problem? Thank you so much for replying, by the way!!

n water that is allowed to run down the outside wall will always give issues.....similarly land that is to high outside the building may cast water over the damp course.
Can you give us some inside / outside pics, and how about lifting a floorboard at the offending area?
Roll the carpet back and allow natural drying in the mean time.
John :)

If you struggle to identify the source of the damp, there aee specialist conpanies that can deal with this.

Can I just ask if this is a cast iron RW pipe, or plastic? ...pinenot :)
