We have just had oak flooring laid on a concrete floor laid about 30 years ago, so do not know if the was a dpm laid. Can anybody tell me what was done in those days?

The flooring has now been removed as it was now touching all four sides of the wall and another room is about to be done as that flooring has begun to pop. The oak floor was glued in blobs and not the whole length so not sure if that was correct!

The concrete flooring was not level and self leveling compound was laid but its still hit and miss.

Can someone explain what should have happened?

Its likely that there was no damp proof membrane.
While these things were about and used on many jobs, a lot of amateurs saved money by doing jobs wrong.
Likewise self leveling compounds were about but not always used properly.

when fully bonding a solid wood floor to anything you'll have to use a notched trowel suitable for the job.

And leveling compound should be given enough time to dry out and should have been applied in such away it had bonded properly with the concrete floor. Those 'spots' are always the weakest link when fully bonding a wood floor.

The wooden flooring is laid like floor tiles? cover the floor with bonding compound and fit floor to it. Not put the compound down in blobs as this would lead to moisture getting in between the new floor and concrete.
