I’m building a 1m high oak sleeper retaining wall and can’t decide if I should place a waterproof or breathable membrane behind it. I will install a drainage pipe at the base and infill with 20mm stone. Any thoughts?
You design and build a retaining wall, and then you face the retaining wall off in brick/stone/sleepers etc. You do not build a retaining wall that's just one leaf of brick/stone/sleeper.
I would suggest using the likes of a structural engineer to have the wall designed as this will include the spec of the foundations.
People don't do this, hence why walls lean and fail.
