I want to refurbish this solid oak kitchen table that has had quite a bit of abuse. It’s got a waxy finish to it which you can easily scrape off with your finger nails. Just wondering the best way to proceed, sand down straight away or try and remove with some kind of stripper. As you can see from the photo, the surface of the table isn’t meant to be smooth flat but has a sort of ‘cork’ effect.

Meths and wire wool.
When wax has gone sand with 180 or 240 grade depending on what you need to take off

Paint stripper removes wax or oil very easily with a scraper. Then you can sand back.

Use a rotary orbital sander with 40 or 60 grit paper going up to 120 or so.
