My house was extended on the ground floor in 2003 by the previous owners. The boiler was relocated into the extension and the F/R pipes run in the roofspace of the extension in 28mm.

I've been up in the (rather narrow) roofspace now and I was suprised to see that in the horizontal run of these 28mm pipes, there are tees with a 100mm ish length of 15mm, capped, going up vertically. There's nothing above them, nor was there ever.

So I'm a bit puzzled as to what they're there for - It really looks like they're put there deliberately.

Photo is a bit blurry but you can see them

Anyone got any ideas?

As above, probably air vents, although it would be much easier to tell if your photo was in focus

They've got end feed stop ends on, that's all. Very simply, it's an end feed reducing tee 28/15/28 and 100mm of 15 vertically terminated in a stop end. I know the photo is rubbish but I didn't look at it til after I'd climbed down which is a 10m crawl through a void 50cm high. Not in a hurry to go back up just to get the perfect shot!!

There was no previous access to the roofspace - I cut a hole in the ceiling to go up.

I suspect they though about some air bleeds but changed their minds.

Are there any automatic air vents that can be trusted enough to install in an inaccessible location?

No there aren't any I would trust in that situation. If the system is working then they're not needed.

I though so. To be fair I've drained and refilled several times and it's not generally a problem to fill. I tend to pump for a bit without the boiler on and move most the air out before I fire the boiler.

Could they be for a radiator that was never ftted ? An abandoned project to do a loft conversion maybe ?

What's the wiring that's taped up in blue tape? Looks a bit suspect

Very suspect. It's joints from a 5core to two bits of T+E. I've already pulled up a new length of 5 core which soon will go all the way to the airing cupboard and will make that mess redundant.

I think I'm going to cut in an access hatch underneath them and put manual air vent caps on. Then it's the job done properly.
