Odd smell at Consumer Unit

An older CU with wire fuses located under the stairs: there is an odd smell coming from the CU, its not quite a heat or burning or rubber smell but strongly synthetic. Any ideas?

Does it smell of fish?

Check and see if anything is over heating or if therre are any loose connections.

ChrisRogers, no it doesn't smell of fish, slightly more acrid. All the connections are tight.

In an attempt to try and isolate the cause, turn off all power and leave the place ventilated for a while. Then go back. Does it still smell?

Yes, a faint smell still remains after venting the area.
