As my name suggests I am newly OFTEC registered and have a problem that I would appreciate help with.
I have recently gone to a Boulter Camray 3 oil boiler which did not want to fire up in the mornings. The manual suggested a new control box was required - I have fitted one and it was ok for a while but now when it tries to start each morning it goes to lockout - the reset button is then pressed and it then works ok for the rest of the day. The same thing then happens the next day. Any Thoughts?
In addition - maybe a strange question, but if you dont ask you dont find out - what exactly does the reset button on the burner do when pressed?
Thank you all in advance - Best Regards.

What value is the motor capacitor? You had better put the old control box back, and keep the new one for a spare.

I see you now have another boiler fault. What was the answer to my question, and did you ever fix this one?

Thank you oilman, I have now fixed this problem by turning up the room thermostat so when the timer comes on it calls for heat and does not lock out, I think this was due to the mild weather recently. It is my dads boiler and when I suggested this in the first place I was poo-pooed!
I did not find the motor capacity value and would appreciate a description of this and its purpose, if only for future reference. The other topic I have put on is to do with a water leak on a worcester 12/14, just wondering if anyone had any experience with these leaking in a particular place-thanks again.

Altering the thermostat has absolutely nothing to do with the burner locking out. The problem not being there now is only coincidence.

I will tell you about the capacitor when you tell me what the value is.

Thanks again oilman - apparantely the boiler did not come on this morning so you are correct - I have asked my mum to look for the motor capacity value and she cannot find any reference to this either in the manual or on the boiler anywhere. Can you tell me if this could be called something else, where this info can be found and what form it takes i.e volts, amps, numbers? Sorry to continue to appear thick.
Some numbers found are as follows; 8Kv - 16 ma, RBL 530 SE 0614, Rg 5FO24/03 "uparrow" S10/15, rated current 3A, nature of supply 50Hz, Regards.

I don't want you to look for numbers, you have to measure it, with a capacitance meter. If you are going to fix oil boilers, you are going to need one, otherwise you will just be a bit changer.

I could tell you what to look for, but try here as it's a diy site, then click CONTACTS, then CD CATALOGUE. You should go on one of their courses too. You have to pay but if you get something for free it's probably worth exactly that.

The 530SE is the type of control box, and the 8kV is the spark voltage, but don't try and measure it without the right piece of kit (which is usually a spark gap)

Thank you oilman - I have today bought a capacitance tester which should be with me in a few days.
I assume the capacitor I need to test is the one in the burner motor, correct?
I have researched capacitor testing on the internet and have found out that to test a capacitor it needs to be fully discharged but am still at a loss as to how to discharge it when it is in situ in the motor?

I'm sorry to interrupt the flow of oil but this topic is freaking me out.

newoilman / oilman - can you be serious?!

You have a problem? He's definitely not me.

OP, caps on ac motor circuits will discharge as the motor runs down. Make sure one of the leads is disconnected. This is a pain where the leads are soldered to the capacitor as you have to work out a way to do it. (A nice little exercise)
