Hi, we have been living in our farmhouse built in 1830 for 5 years. We have an oil fired floor mounted boiler with a twin wall flue that dissapears into the old chimney at ceiling level. On the roof there is no twin wall flue at the chimney pot so I suspect the twin wall stops once it has entered the masonry chimney. We have had no problems until yesterday when I noticed a smell of burning. After searching around I found the 1st floor bedroom wall where the chimney is located to be very hot, and the smell seemed to be the same bedrooms laminate floor against the wall. I immediately turned the heating off & the smell went. However some 4 hours later the wall is still very hot. I have opened up the twin wall and tried to sweep the flue but seem to be hitting an obstacle. I now plan to get this investigated but it is really bugging me as to what could have happened yesterday. The only work done recently was around 4 weeks ago we had a clay rain cap fitted to the chimney pot but it has run 4 weeks without a problem since???

I suspect a tar deposit had built up in the chimney, and somehow it had ignited. Depending on how old the boiler was, it could have been running with v hot flue temperature and set light to it. It could also have been twigs dropper by rooks or jackdaws, nicely coated they have immense amounts of energy available. Get the chimney lined from top to bottom, AFTER getting it swept.
