Any recommendations/warnings on a manufacturer/model
I am looking for a 75000-100000 floor standing unit to replace the current museum piece, which has sipped rather too much nectar in the last few months.

What exactly is the problem? You can have a new boiler if you want one, but you may not need to have a total replacement. What make is the current one, and which burner is fitted and where is the boiler?

You have to have possible modifications to the rest of the system to make it comply with current regs if you replace the boiler.

The current one has to be seen to be beleived-it must be late fifties-I can do you a photo if youre up for a giggle.Youll have to tell me how to upload it though.
I had a guy round who wanted to put a Worcester in for £1300.
(Being a Herefordian I am naturally averse to anything to do with THAT county even if its just the name)
It would live in its own little room at the back of the house which is a detatched 4 bed with 18" thick stone walls.I would rather it stood up than hang on the wall.
I would buy it a new food tank and it would only work a few hours a day using brand new equipment
I really want to do as much as possible myself partly because im a skinflint but mainly because ,due to past experience, Id rather it was done thouroughly with my interests at the forefront rather than lining someone elses pocket. The guy with the worcester drove a shiny BMW 4x4.
Having read the thread it would appear there would be little I could do.

You need to read some other threads then, here it is again:

Am I bashing my head against a brick wall? It certainly feels like it.

There is nothing illegal about DIYers fitting their own heating systems, but nice as they are, weargas and AlanE can no more certify someone elses work legally than I can. THEY CAN SELF CERTIFY THEIR OWN WORK.

For the third party certification DIYers have to get this from the building control department., because heating systems, like windows and doors are now classed as controlled services under part L of the building regs of 1997 and subsequently made criminal law in April 2002.

DIYers can install their own, but they must tell the building control department first, and they will issue the certificate when it's finished and correct then you can have it comissioned by weargas or AlanE, (but not me as I ain't gas .

Worcester boilers might be ok, but their helpline is long winded. I suggest you look at Boulter, Grant, Heating World, Mistral, Warmflow, They have people who answer the phone and they are all good boilers (well, so are Worcester)

That's a low price, what does Shiny BMW do for the money? I haven't got a shiny, expensive, anything. Does it include flushing the system?

Sorry if I touched a nerve
No -his price was just for unplugging the old and putting in the new

Having settled for a Boulter, I can confirm that their after-sales service is superb. I've called them three times, twice with technical queries which were answered expertly and quickly - no menu driven voice machine - and once to query a missing part. A fuel-line filter and ball valve showed in the manual as "supplied with boiler" but weren't. The girl said they no longer supplied them as standard but she would honour the manual (an old edition packed by mistake) and post the parts immediately.

This is not to knock any other make of boiler - I know little about them - but based on my experience so far, Boulter after-sales are unbeatable.

Sorry if I touched a nerve .....

I don't think I've got any so don't worry (Though one customer thought I had a nerve to charge £800 to replace a boiler) Wonder how Shiny BMW earns enough at that price though, unless he goes by the name of 'arfa job.

So what would be a fair going rate.?
The site is all prepared and it would appear that it would just be a bit of change to the pipework to graft the new unit in.

There's no way of saying without seeing the site. Though I would expect it to be more than £1300 if the system is being flushed, and he's supplying the boiler.
