Hello, I'm having lots of problems with my Sterling 40 ST108 oil burner. I'm not sure what make the heat exchanger is. The burner is outside.

There seems to be several problems with it but the main problm is it locks out (the orange light on the front goes on) every few hours. If I press the button before going to bed it always goes out sometime during the night- making the place cold by the morning.

I was told that it might need an "inlet baffle box" to stop freezing air going in but I don't know where to get these as google doesn't seem to know about them - could that help?

When it does work it makes a lot of "booming" noises and sounds like the flame is being relit perhaps. The metal plate on the top of the heat exchanger that has some wadding under flutters a lot too.

If any oilies out there can help I'd be very grateful.

It would probably be a good idea to have the pump pressure tested - its usually between 110 and 150 psi depending on the spec. You don't say if the burner has been recently serviced but they do perform much better if the flue baffles are clean and the complete burner unit blown out with compressed air. Obviously the ignition system is ok as the burner does normally relight. A new nozzle is always a good move for around £6 , and a flue gas analysis should complete the job :)

thanks Burnerman. I was wondering about changing the nozzel but I was uncertain about how to identify which one I need. Is the make and model written on the side of it so I know I'm getting an exact replacement?

Cheers

Hi - if you look at the markings on the side of the nozzle, you'll probably see something like this:
Danfoss .60 80' EH
So - Danfoss is the makers name
.60 means that this nozzle can pass .60 of a gallon per hour of fuel
80' this is the fan spray of the nozzle in degrees
EH is actually the profile of the nozzle spray....its a bit difficult to understand as the spray is so fine, but some of the sprays have hollow cones, some have sprays that terminate flat, some have multiple hollows in them etc. When replacing, go for the exact match if you can - I've found that the nozzle size (.60) and the nozzle spray angle (80') is quite important and sometimes critical. The EH being less so.
Cheers John :)

cant you post a pic of the boiler?

Sterlings are good burners, so wtf is it attached to.?

thx again Burnerman, I'll try changing the nozzel.

The boiler is outside and the burner had been exposed to some rain. I've changed the motor, fan assembly and control box already.

there's 2 pics in my album now.

The picture of the top of the boiler shows the baffle (i think) that flutters loudly and black smoke sometimes seeps through the wadding. it also looks like the baffle is a cracked a bit so it would be nice to know what make/model the boiler is so I can get a replacement.

The front on picture might help identifying it too?

edited to include the pics here:

Nozzles sometimes are a problem, but rarely. With all the money you are spending on bits, it would be cheaper to get someone in, failing that it won't be long before you have spent more on bits than a new burner would cost.

Wilhelm asked what boiler is it fitted to.

It would be more help to insert pictures in the post, having to swan around for your album will mean they don't get looked at.

ah yes, a blue boiler.

well the access plate needs some new glass rope, or graunching down a bit , if its leaking.

other than that, youre going to have to do some fault finding?

might be photocell, might be a lump of crud on blast tube, might be pump.
filter at tank, water in tank?

fekk knows...

when you changed the motor did you check/replace the dog coupling bet thats the problem ;)
As said above the amount of money and time your spending you should get someone to check it over as you need the right tools to re-set the boiler e.g. pressure gauge soot pump...

 very unlikely.

Ive forgotten to fit them, or they have not aligned but never had one fekked.

ah well.
