Hi.

Can someone tell me what oil I need for the pump of a Karcher pressure washer.

Mine has lost power and I've been told to re-oil the pump.

Thanks.

I believe the part number is: 6.288-050

But if the seal(s) have gone you will probably need a new pump.

Hi cumbriahandyman.

I'm assuming that if the seals are gone then there would be water leaking.

A neighbour poured some oil he uses into the pistons, but it is still not working to the max power it used to.

Is it possible there could be a problem with the lance.

Is there a way I can check what part could be damaged.

Thanks.

Unscrew the nozzle at the tip. Sometimes a tiny piece of dirt lodges in there and reduces the pressure. After unscrewing the outer nut there is a little barrel inside, hold this up to the light and see if there is anything blocking it. If there is it will usually come out if you blow down it from the outlet side. If this doesn't shift it GENTLY clear it with a pin or give it a sharp tap on the floor/table to dislodge it.
If you are going to use any oil make sure it is a very light oil such as compressor oil, DO NOT use standard car/diesel oil, it is too thick.
As stated, if the seals are gone it will be cheaper to buy a new unit rather than get it repaired.

I bought a Karcher pressure washer from a Labour club auction, for £5 I think it was...they always come up, not worth the time to investigate the fault.

My strimmer motor bust, repair costs £45, new strimmer from auction, £3

Parents Dyson vacuum cleaner intermittant power, cost of repair £25, cost of repair, a new 3 core electrical cable that I already had, and some crimps, that I had. Bugger getting the power switch off though.

I think the chap who recommended your pressure washer needed some oil was probably the same one one who recommended greasing my car brake pads when they were squeaking.

I always use copper grease on my brake pads

Indeed - a thin smear of copper grease on the backs stops squeal. My grandaddy told me he uses it a lot - sqeeel piggy ;)

Thanks guy's.

I've tried a few things, but nothing seems to be doing any good.

I'll bin it and get a new one.

Thanks.

Did you try removing the piston and spring and re greasing then up?

Is the filter on the inlet in good condition?
Any debris getting will through will damage the piston seals.

It happened to mine anyway and the prressure dropped dramatically. Got it re-sealed for £80.

Yes.

I took it apart and re-greased everything.

I paid £250 about 5 years ago, so rather than fork out more money for this one I would prefer to put the money towards a new one.

Cheers for all your feedback.

I normally unscrew the lance from the unit altogether, hose and all, then switch it on and see how the jet flows out of the washer.
This will tell you if the lance is blocked or not.
If the unit doesn't have an electrical cut out and just by-pass valves it could need the valves rebuilt, only a few quid.
