Hi,
When we moved into our house, some separated paint oil (we think) leaked onto the hall floor from a binbag - leaving some dark stains. We didnt do much about it at the time (being young and stupid!) but are now wanting to sell our flat and the marks are quite obvious on entering the house.
We have tried white spirit followed by soapy water but hasn't made much difference. Other than sanding the entire floor and starting again is there anything else we can try to repair or lessen the damage.
The floor has previously been oiled, not varnished. I have also posted on the 'wood' forum.
Thanks, all advice much appreciated!

trouble with that is you may have left if too long, I would be thinking along the lines of :-

1) try sanding down the affected area

2) if this has no affect you may have to strip, stain and varnish the whole lot

3) replace affected area or whole floor

l4) lazy mans way out!
If your selling perhaps a rug may cover this problem?

If it's paint binder then your best chance is Nitromorse.

Try rubbing it with steelwool 000 first and apply hard wax. If that doesn't shift the mark then you are in luck your floor has an oil finish.
Locally sand (hand sander going WITH the grain) the spot and surrounding area and apply a few coats of hard wax (not hardwaxoil or other oil).
There will be a colour difference in the beginning (but you could use that as an extra 'selling point': small damages on oiled floors are easy to repair ;))
