Hi Guys,

I'm new here. I've just purchased some new IPE deck boards (picture1) for my garden deck project. I am confused as to what oil to use to oil it and prevent it from weathering and changing silver/grey. I am after a dark brown shiny colour as pictured in picture2. Does anyone know what colour the deck in picture2 has been oiled in? and any idea how to get that deep shine?

So far i've come across some ronseal decking oil products but the colour options are very confusing. There are also oils that are clear. I've also found the following on screwfix: http://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-timber-decking-oil-oak-5ltr/53805 it has good reviews but not sure what kind of colour it will be.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Osmo decking oil is available in clear and also non- slip variety.
The photo looks like it was taken immediately after rain or washing so is still wet. Silvering of timber is a natural process you may delay but not prevent.

Thanks for your reply. I applied a bit of water evenly on the IPE deck to create a patch and see what kind of colour a clear oil might give. By applying water it darkens the colour and I kind of like the wet colour. Just wondering, if I get clear decking oil, will that darken the colour just like applying water does? obviously the water application only gives the darker appearance for a short time until water dries out.

Thanks

yes oil will make the wood dark and wet-look.

On hardwood you should use a quality specialist decking oil like the very good osmo foxhole linked too, the normal ronseal type stuff from a diy shed will not give you the protection or colour required as they are only really designed for softwood stuff.

To stop it greying you want a UV protecting oil too like osmo 420 UV and anti algae.

Give someone like silva timber a call as they will be able to tell you the best thing for your requirements

Thanks, i'll give Silva Timber a call. Can I use something like osmo 420 UV on top of another coating of oil, or can i just apply the Osmo 420 UV directly on the IPE? or i am assuming the 420 UV is just to protect from UV but i still need another oil for weathering?

no that oil is a stand-alone treatment. It has a uv stabilizer in it but is a normal oil.

The Uv rays are laregly what does the weathering and turns the wood grey hence the need for a uv stable type of oil
