I've had the old nasty gas fire take out my living room, it has exposed a cast iron think that says 'redfyre' on the front of it.

My house is an ex-local authority 60's semi. The chiminey seems to be in good serviceable condition but im going to have this checked properly.

Is the cast iron thing a 'back boiler' how should it work? What should i do about it? I fancy re-installing a real fire just for very ocassional use.

I can find no mention of this type of thing on the internet, i suppose it doesnt help im not sure what it is.

I hope this is the correct section, i asume its plumbing/heating related.

Im no nearer,

all the google pages are the newer style 'redfyre' solid fuel back boilers from a modern company 'trianco redfyre'

The thing in my wall seems older and un known.

It`s a back boiler..........reminds me when I was a nipper..no other source of hot water (other than kettle) in our 50`s Cauncil hause  Bleedin fire lit in the summer.Remember Coke  You need to trace what, if anything it`s connected to

My old granny has what she calls a Readyfire (?sp?) has a coal fire in the living room that heats the hot water cylinder upstairs. Seems to her like free hot water.
