I had my chimney stack removed about 6 months ago, but the builder left a ness in the fire place were all the rubble fell down.

After I cleaned out the fire opening I noticed quite a bit of damaged brickwork where the old coal fire& back boiler used to be.

Could the broken bricks at the back be asbestos and would this cause any problems?

Its doubtful that its asbestos - wear a respirator and gloves, and dont create dust when you move it.
Why are you concerned about the bricks at the back - what do you intend to do with the fireplace?

The flue needs sweeping - and any other flues that terminated in the stack might need examining and sweeping as well.

It was the bit at the back of the chimney just above the clean cement (middle of the photo) the concerned me the most

The gas fire has gone, its now blanked of with a metal sheet & duct tape against the marble (The one from behind the gas fire). I was just concerned that when the builder knocked the stack off it disturbed the damaged brickwork/cement

He made quite a mess when he removed the stack it the fireplace was full of rubble, and filled the house of soot!
