Easy fix for plumber?
No, has to be a gas safe registered engineer or your emergency service provider/energy supplier. Turn off the supply at the emergency control valve, if the meter is internal do no operate any electrical switches on or off and ventilate the property, do not smoke or operate any naked flames, sparks etc.

Turn you gas supply off at the emergency control and call 0800 111999 they will come and replace the meter for free, do it now not tomorrow
Do they still swap meters Ian? I was told by Cadent engineer (iirc) they don’t really do it much anymore, or they have to obtain permission, something to do with assets?

Am I right in thinking that the escaping gas will sink to the floor, and accumulate in voids or the lowest part of the building?

yes it is complicated these days depending on the supplier but you have to contact them first and they will start the ball rolling

If it’s the barrel, then might have to be replaced, if it’s the screw new ones are available.
