Im sure this is terminal...

The boiler is an old Glow worm 65-80B which has been working fine for years i presume. Recently the pilot light went out and after reading the instructions on the boiler panel managed to relight it. Sometimes it has been hard to light and on one occasion i removed the inspection panel and lit the pilot light using a cooker lighter...

There is a lot of water about. I note that where the cast iron part of the boiler meets the section with the burners there looks to be corrosion at the joint and water is seeping out. When the burner has lit it makes the usual burning sound but now it actually has a boiling sound to it which is new! Today i tried to like the pilot light with the lighter again but nothing happens as if there is no gas to burn!

My biggest fear is that the boiler might be buggered. Im in the British Gas scheme but its not been inspected yet and so it will be already faulty. If it is buggered im gonna be stuffed as i live on incapacity benefit. Are there special loans to cover the costs?????

I think sentinel make an internal leak sealer. Something along the lines of Radweld for car radiators. I know someone who tried it with a positive result that lasted about 18 months.

Apart from that you may find that THIS is of interest

Somewhere in there I found this >>
Q. Do I need to pay for any work?

A. In cases when the measures recommended exceed the grant maxima, the schemes will work wherever possible to cover the additional costs from other funds. However in some cases applicants may be required to make a contribution.

A boiler with the main heat exchanger leaking is classed as Immediately Dangerous ! You should stop using it !!!

You had better start researching Warmfront which has lots of schemes for assisted replacement boilers etc.

Some councils will also fit boilers free for some people although I dont know why!

Just noticed this part of what you wrote

Today i tried to like the pilot light with the lighter again but nothing happens as if there is no gas to burn!

Put up with electric heaters for a while and DO NOT even attempt to fix it.
If it aint working then that increases your likelihood of getting a free boiler. In your position I would say that Warmfront will definitely help you.

thanks for the really prompt relies.. :)

Ok so its dangerous. I shall have to stop trying to relight it then.. I am getting some hot water.. i didn't think the electric immersion heater was actually switched on but im getting enough for a wash or a small bath. There is a switch for something going into the top of the tank but the light is off!

I shall look into Warmfront definately. I assume the Brit Gas guy will certify it "Kaput" if need be.

I was wondering how old this boiler would be.. It was here when i moved in...

Thanks a lot folks...

I don't think they have a warmfront scheme in Germany, just an eastern front and a western front.

Im back in the UK now so have edited my location... That said.. Berlin is a fantastic place to live..

Applied for a Warmfront grant last night via their website. Will see what happens..
