Old home electrics

I live in an 1880s Victorian flat (conversion from house).

New light fittings and new fuse board for the downstairs was fitted 2 years ago.

After about a year a couple of the lights seem to flicker every few weeks. It's quite infrequent.

The electrician came and said it's an older house and sometimes there are slight electricity surges in certain homes) but it seems to be contained to only two lights? Any other thoughts?

Could be loose connections, possibly at one of the ceiling roses (from where the other light is fed).

If LEDs could be them!

True. My girlfriend had several Philips LED lamps that flickered for quite some time until they failed completely.

Ah interesting, I think they might be LEDs although one is a three bulb chandelier and they all go at once?

The other is a wall light, one of two and only one of them plays up so could be the bulb.

Check for loose wires in the fittings

The chandelier sounds like it's a problem common to all three lamps, so check the wiring. With the wall light it could be lamp, lamp holder or wiring. Is that BC or ES/SES? If ES it could well be a loose centre contact. In that case turn off power at the consumer unit and carefully bend up the spring in the socket with a small screwdriver.

Thank you, I'll try that for the wall lamp. For the ceiling light, the electrician is saying it's probably just electrical surges, or the lamp isn't great quality (although it was very expensive)!
