Some great old photos here in the Manchester Evening News of street scenes from the 30s, 40, 50s and 60s:

Street parties, sinking roads and a celeb shoe shop... 15 pics of north Manchester's past - Manchester Evening News

From the days before mass car ownership, before the internet, mobile phones, mass immigration and globalisation; and when neighbours knew each other.

I love this picture in particular. Pre-health and safety roof workers in flat caps. I wonder if you can get a hard-hat version of a flat cap?

I've got a few books of old pictures of Manchester and Stockport. Really interesting but what I'm really after I can't find. Like a lot of housing estates, ours was a farm until c1960.

It would be great to see pictures of the houses going up.

Maybe that was why the gaffers always used to wear bowlers - were they like Odd Job's bowler I wonder?

Any idea where that is?

Edit: Ah, Moston...

Have you tried the Manchester Museum Service? Borough Engineers often photographed work in progress (both local authority and private builds) and some of that does end up with the museum service.
