I was wondering, does anyone know where I can find really old editions of the wiring regulations (as in single digit or so). Just out of curiosity to see what the standards were like then. I've read that the 1st edition was only 4 pages - quite a difference to today's standards!

Just a strange fascination of mine...

Damn you! You appear to have triggered off a strange fascination to me as well

I'd love to see the 1st edition regs!

Let us know if you manage to find any Ye Olde Electrical Regs.

The first edition (or perhaps I should say, one version of it) is reproduced in the "Commentary on IEE Wiring Regulations" by Paul Cook.

I manage to reproduce it on one side of A4 for a lecture I gave to the IEE in Manchester many moons ago - mind you my eye sight was better then :D.

I know someone who has all editions - he spent a lot of time on ebay :D.

According to the latest (on page 7), the 5th edition was actually when the name was changed.

Nice list though - didn't realise the Pat P building regs came in so early

Hadn't spotted that! I'd found the list on the Internet sometime ago and saved it in case it came handy.

I'll have to go find the source and have it corrected.
Edit: Found it at http://www.electricalreference.co.uk/
can't see how to change/post a change on there though.

Hey ho. That's plagiarism for you..

According to the latest (on page 7), the 5th edition was actually when the name was changed.

Confirmed by the list in the front of the 14th edition, which also is a little more precise regarding the 13th edition, viz.:

13th edition issued 1955.
Reprinted incorporating amendments 1958.
Reprinted incorporating amendments 1961.
Reprinted incorporating amendments 1962.
Reprinted incorporating amendments 1964.
Amendments issued 1964.

Additionally, early reprints of the 14th edition also incorporated amendments. The history as listed in the 14th revised metric edition:

14th edition issued 1966.
Reprinted incorporating amendments 1968.
Reprinted incorporating amendments 1969.
Supplement on use in metric terms issued 1969.
Amendments issued 1970.
Rperinted in metric units incorporating amendments 1970.

Gotta love the internet, multiple sources :D

I have almost every copy, bar the 6th Edition, albeit that a few of the earlier editions are facimilies acquired before the age of the internet.

I started off working to on the 13th Edition, but have obviously had to keep abreast of subsequent editions. But I'll tell thee what though: those earlier editions were so much much more lucid than the current set of Regs - and they didn't require a suplementary Idiots Guide (OSG).....

Hi there lukescotty. Welcome!

hey, i'm the owner of www.electricalreference.co.uk I've not updated it for a while due to being busy at work, what needs changing on that list???

regards lukescotty

p.s I know this is an old topic

It the date for Part P. in electricalreference you say

"2004 Part P of the Building Regulations becomes law "
in fact
Part P came into effect in England and Wales on 1st January 2005.

You have to be 120% correct on this forum or you get slated.

Hey Lucia, have you got this one?

1/6d, those were the days!

Gosh, didn't realise you were *that* old, Perhaps your problems with the 16th and 17th stem from an issue focususing on small text these days  , its only time before you find modern ladders become very unsteady and modern screwdrivers very difficult to grip...

So

in 1882 they started to think "Hmm this here electricity stuff might be dangerous"

before then they did not apparerntly

What happened was the phoenix insurance company realised they were getting quite a lot of fire claims due to poorly installed electric arc lights and thought there ought to be a code of practice to regulate the installation of electrical equipment, it seems that more than a centrary later that we have still failed to reach the desired standards as similar reasons were stated for the introduction of part P in 2005 :D

The first electricity legislation was made in 1882.

The Electric Lighting Act 1882 remained active for over 100 years. It was repealed in 1989.
