One side of my bathroom wall is an external solid wall. The bricks are dry as a bone and the mortar is crumbly. I am planning to dot and dab tile backers + mechanical fix before tiling over. Would you advise to render the wall to strengthen it first or just dot and dab over the said brick wall? Thanks

If you insist on dot and dabbing it, you must it first with a pargetting coat to stop drafts from cracks in the mortar. Thin mortar/bonding plaster etc....
