I have an old rectangle small table, aged around 1920, with the chess inset squares. I sent just the top part to have a few repairs done, which were OK, but as well as the repairs the top has been painted over in Shellac which I don't like and I don't think represents that era. I was hoping to use a light stain. Can anyone advise how to get rid of this Shellac without damaging the woodwork? Thank you for any help.

FYI,
If it's a 1920 table Shelac will definatly be right for the era.

Oh, that's a surprise, I didn't know that. Then maybe I should leave it as it is and save myself a lot of work. Thank you!
