One ring

My phone rings just once and stops, if I pick it up quick enough the caller is often still there.

When I phoned home earlier I got one ring and then nothing. I held on and a few seconds later the wife answered.

Any suggestions as to what the cause might be. Oh! I have used a second phone and get the same thing, so rules out a phone problem.

It is a line issue. Report it.

To make absolutely sure, disconnect your wiring from the master socket by removing the lower half of the socket (assuming you have a modern socket).

As above one ring is usually a line fault.

It's usually caused by a rectified loop condition on the line - Basically where damp and a small amount of corrosion causes a partial short on the line when subjected to the ringing voltage.

The person calling will hear one or two ringback tones, then it will go quiet, as though you had just picked up the phone and hung up again straight away.

As noted already, disconnect any extension wiring at the NTE to isolate that as potential problem, plug a good phone into the test jack and then try calling your number from another phone (or, on a BT line, dial 17070 then choose option 1 for ringback and hang up).

If it still just rings once or twice and then trips, it's an outside line fault.

Does not give an option one!

2 or 3 only available 2 is for a quiet line test.

Thats because you have your line set to withhold number. Try dialing 1470 first then 17070 and it should work.

Cheers, that worked a treat, phone now ringing OK. The problem seems to have been with an extension socket that is no longer used.

Thanks to all who offered advice. TTFN :D

90 per cent true except you can get a rectified loop on the master socket its self, mostly due to the old metal contacts that are no longer used on a nte being corroded, new ntes have idc connections.
