There is a pipe running to the oil boiler under ground and a pipe in the loft running to the hot water cylinder if there were 3 or 4 pipes what would the other 1 or 2 be for?
Problem is new oil boiler when on to heat rads the back boiler take most of the heat running to some of the radiators may have to be disconnected or be removed.
Ahh. Did you mean how many pipes are connected to your fireback boiler?
Minimum 2 (flow/return to cylinder).
3 would be possible (vent pipe plus flow/return to hot water cylinder and heat dump rad.
4 also possible- 1 pair running cylinder and heat dump (must be gravity circulation), 1 pair running heating (can be pumped).
Take it you or someone have thrown an oil boiler at the system rather than integrating it properly?
Are you planning on using the open fire as an additional heat source for heating/hot water? If yes there's a lot more to it than just chucking a boiler in- see this thread for discussions on the reverse (Thread ).
If no but you want to use the open fire then ideally you'd remove the back boiler completely. If that's not possible then disconnect all pipework, drain the back boiler AND LEAVE ALL PIPE ENDS CONNECTED TO THE BACK BOILER OPEN AND VENTING INTO FREE AIR. Unless you like explosions.
Details of what would need to be connected to what to bypass the back boiler impossible to say from your description- pics would help, so would a diagram but given the hazards involved a site visit from a competent engineer accustomed to dealing with uncontrolled heat sources would be best.
