Hello everyone! Newbie here so go easy and apologies if this is posted in the wrong area...

We have a Victorian cottage it was built in 1877. The previous owners have really done a number on the house and we’re trying to restore the house back to how it should be and right all their wrongs.

Can anyone help me with a few questions I have regarding bedroom fireplaces? We’d like to get some cast iron inserts from salvage yards etc.

Edit: the grate in the picture is purely decorative.
- How do I measure said fire for insert?

- what’s with the stone square around the fire? Is it some sort of lintel?

- best way to go about restoring?

Thanks,

Kerry
