Opened fireplace, no lintel?

I've started to open up a fireplace where the previous owner had an elec fire. They had boarded the opening with osb on the wooden frame you can see, plastered and then mounted on the face of the chimney. Once removed you can see the remnants of an old gas install too.

I'm struggling to see a lintel though. Wouldnt it be visible by now? In a previous house we did the same and the lintel was really obvious. The metal you can see doesnt seem much and is more of a piece of edging angle i think.

Also not really sure why they had removed a block bottom left and boarded over it.

Depends how heigh the original opening was, any indication if you take pics from the inside of the fireplace?
 
Hmm not sure...all looks quite old and doesnt go up far from the opening
