Opening up a ceiling

I want to open up the low ceiling in my bathroom to expose the roof above. The loft is only about 3 foot high at most. Is this (relatively) easy, or do I have to get a pro in? Can I remove ceiling joists or do they actually hold up the walls?! Any advice gratefully received...

before you do anything get a structural engineer in to look at it as in most roof s the ceiling joists are in tension and stop the roof from spreading and collapsing
