Our boiler only works when we punch it!

Hello all

The boiler heats up to temperature, and rightly switches off. But then will not come back on again.

We had a service contract in place with a local company but they have now said they shouldnt have covered us because of the age of our boiler and have sent us a cheque refunding our premiums! We are aware that this must be against one or two trading laws but in the meantime we have no heating.

The one thing we did get from this excellent company was that the engineer told us that it did seem to come on when he knocked it on the right hand side. We are now doing this on the hour every hour, but mornings are freezing!

Is it possible for anyone to add up these symptoms and let us know what the fault may be? Theres no brand on the boiler but i think the engineer said it was an Apollo

Most likely a electrical fault, on a printed circuit board maybe!
examine soldered connections for dry or cracked joints. And any other joints that may be loose
Poor joints sometimes work while cool, but expand when heated and go open circuit.

I wouls suspect that it is a faulty air pressure switch.

couldbe sticking diaphragm in switch or microswitch in aps - intermittent fault - could be ignition fault too/anything really - pump sticking??....

pump overrun switch is bottom right and are prone to sticking.

This is typically the kind of thing for which you need a breakdown specialist. Guessing what it is and replace parts until it works will take a lot longer and can cost you more in the end.

Definately as above. Ive got a 23 year old Thorn Apollo and that is one of the only 2 faults it has had. Pump overun switch

We had this. Turned out to be a sticking fan. At this stage, I figured it was going to be more cost effective to replace our old, worn out completely knackered Worcester 280.

Anyone need a 1 month old expansion vessel for the 280 at a knockdown price?
