After a long wait we found a good reasonable local trader to replace the rotted roof on our porch. The day it was done was extremely hot and the mixing of the plastic/mastic stuff was inevitably very unpleasant. The fumes came into front and back so we had to shut windows and put fans on. We understood that the smell might endure for some hours until set and we had to live with that but 2 days on the porchway is still rank with the toxic smell. There is no opening window there so I have had the letterbox propped open day and night. We seem to have swapped an organic musty smell for a toxic chemical smell and i am feeling sinussy with it.
I thought i would just ask experts if this is normal or whether the smell should be gone yet? It hasnt got significantly less pungent either? We have paid the trader and he hasnt replied to my question - i am fairly sure it would be only hours not days?

Thank you to the people who have replied. We cant keep the front door open all day and night and we have a small dog who could escape into the road and anyone badly motivated could wander in . When i described it as toxic i meant toxic to me as I all ready have airway problems and sensitivity to chemicals..the smell is clogging my sinuses and making me feel headachy. It may not even be harmful in terms of poisoning but it is making me unwell and the build up of gas could surely be flammable? Fortunately we dont smoke but God help the next person who calls here with a fag! I am trying really fed up of the very strong smell. I looked online to see if i could identify the brand of resin but could only remember the large green mixing pot. Whatever the chemical is it may be a small amount but nontheless causing me to feel bad. I just want to know this is going to go away and not be permanent? How long?

yes after a while you will stop noticing it when you get home. that means it has all evaporated.

Light a scented candle and put it by the front door. The candle scent will over power the smell of the roof. If the gas happens to be flammable then there will be an explosion and it will blow the roof off. Then you can get it redone in felt which doesn’t smell much.

I remember the smell of my dad's new Reliant Van ( the one before the Del Boy model) It still haunts me - and he bought it new in '63:unsure:
