Hi all

Probably a basic silly question but here we go…

I want to change my crappy old outside light to something a bit more modern.

I’ve replaced light fittings before so I’m (or was) fairly confident in doing it. But I’ve taken the cover off and I have a black, yellow and blue cable into the block with a random red cable not connected to anything. The colours don’t seem to match with what I was expecting.

Can someone just confirm which colour is which. I’ve attached a picture.

House is just over 20 years old.

I just want to make sure I wire it correctly.

Thanks

Well, the 'black' is a well oxidised bare copper earth wire - not needed for a plastic fitting.

The Yellow is in L and the Blue is in N - we assume that is correct.

You should terminate the unused red in a spare connector block just in case it is connected to something at the other end.

The cable is three core so maybe used for previous/ future our light. Test the red conductor voltage and terminate as necessary

So could the alternating current in most appliances - but It has L N and E marked at the terminals.
