Just isolated the outside tap for winter. The plastic Hozelock couplings on the tap were always unsatisfactory as they would blow off without string loops to hold them on. A plumber recently (doing a different job) told us we have high mains pressure.

Anyway back to today's drama. I tried swapping the Hozelock coupling for a simple brass push-on that I had left over, that has an O-ring seal to the tap. Couldn't get it to properly seal despite putting it tight and slathering the o-ring with Aquasil, then the hose jumped off. D'oh! If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Is there a better solution? Maybe involving a new outside tap, the old one is 25yrs old.

Use the zinc metalised Hozelock types - very good fittings.

As suggested though if pressure is too high then that can also affect the internal outlets etc and can promote premature failure. Mains doesn't need to be any more than ~3bar really - as suggested fit a Pressure reducing valve (drop tight) on the mains.
