I had the BT Gas Heating engineer out the other day and he said that my system was 'Overpumping' and putting hot water into the small tank at the top of the loft ( F&E, I think). He said this was due to a build up of sludge.
He suggested that the system needs cleaning out at a cost of £500 - £600.

He then suggested draining of some water and adding a double shot of Sentenal X400 to the top tank, leave this is in for 4 weeks, then to completey drain and refill the system and add Sentenal X100.

Any suggestions or thoughts on this solution would be much appreciated.

Try it and see. Sometimes it works, and your system gets something of a clean. It will take all day to drain and refill and bleed the air and balance the radiators, but it won't cost £600.

PS I'll do a powerflush for £450 (and I won't need to work the next day)

I had the same problem and mine was the boiler stat faulty so the boiler was overheating the water causing to expand back at the F&E tank. Might pay you to check this first before paying out as this would be the cheapest way of finding out.

ps: you could try and turn down the boiler stat to see if it make any difference.
