"P&O Ferries has paused its services "in preparation for a company announcement" later on Thursday.

The ferry operator said it was not going into liquidation but all ferries had been instructed to stay in port.

Union RMT urged the firm to protect jobs amid speculation that hundreds of crewmembers could "be sacked and replaced with foreign labour".

As a result some sailings scheduled for today have been cancelled, with passengers told to use other companies.

P&O services scheduled today include 14 between Dover and Calais and three between Liverpool and Dublin.

The union said it has instructed members to stay on board their vessels once they have docked or risk being "locked out" of their jobs."

my guess is they are concerned that the ships may do a runner to international waters and be outside the reach of creditors. You have to have control of assets if you are selling

The reason they are staying in port could because they can't afford the cost of fuel, LOL.

Not sacked according to the announcement, employees will be offered an "enhanced severance package that is well beyond the statutory requirements". Crewing has been outsourced to a cheaper 3rd party, but since the business has not been sold, there would be no TUPE protection.

Unions may want to negotiate up that package, but risk people getting statutory if they stay onboard trespassing. Very sad. Maybe a competitor could start up.

A real shame.

P&O have also not handled it sensitively, but then that's not a surprise considering that they'd have to deal with the RMT union.

rather ironic -they've sacked British workers and replaced them with Eastern European workers

a brexit benefit I suppose

Yep. Cheaper workers. That's what was ****ing up the wages for many trades. Great if you want a cheap wall built but not so great if you've spent your life in a trade and found yourself priced out of the market because you're not prepared to live away from home and sleep ten to a room.

One of my neighbours has just gone back into the toshing game. He gave up a few years ago when he was expected to work 8 till 6 for £80 a day in London because the Eastern Europeans were doing it. Dunno what he's getting now but it must be worth his while. He's home by 5.00 most days.

This caper is being challenged in the courts

apparently security guards boarded the ships with hand cuffs ready to be used
