Packing steel lintel

This is a follow on question to my last post:

I've got the lintel in. The joint is tight, I've only got a couple of mm (see pic). In some places the lintel isn't touching the bricks above.

Q1. Would you put a wet mix on top of the lintel, then push in and dry pack the bearings? Otherwise it won't be doing anything.

Q2. Any idea how to get the packing mix into a 3mm gap? Decorators scraper? Too narrow for a tuck pointer.

Typically you'd leave a 25...ish mm gap. How have you managed to slide a lintel in with a 3 or 4 mm gap above and below? A wider photo would help.
 
I would just foam it all in when you fit your hatch, it's not really doing much. Use a decent brand and avoid this one, I used it yesterday and it's crap, sets like candyfloss:

It's a meter box lintel (like a steel angle) for a single skin wall. I drilled out the mortar course and slid it in.

Oh, right. I'd pack beneath with a slate and any mortar you can get in.
