I have some really ugly window putty work on the outside of a window which I cannot reach to alter ... when viewed from within the room (i.e. looking out of the window) it looks bad. So, when I painted the inside of the window this week I painted into the glass with the paint about 1cm and it covered everything up nicely. Basically, it has formed a sharp white border at the edge of the glass.

Trouble is, the paint has formed a film that comes loose very easily and was easily damaged when the window was cleaned this morning. I applied:

2 coats of Zinsser BIN which the manufacturer claims will adhere well to glass (this has NOT been my experience ... it adheres but also comes right off with great ease ... by no means a solid solution to painting glass)

2 coats of Dulux Trade High Gloss on top of the BIN.

I didn't use a gloss undercoat under the gloss, but the undercoat would not solve this problem, because the BIN itself is coming off the glass easily, and BIN is supposed to adhere to glass better than gloss undercoat anyway.

It is clear that this film is not going to last long. Is there any other paint I can use that will firmly stick to the glass for a long-lasting solution? Or, in other words, what is the best paint to use to get a solid opaque colour on to glass? [Spraying is *not* an option]

Thanks.

I presume you're talking about the inside? In that case so long as the glass was dry Zinsser should've stuck like the proverbial to a blanket :) ... Gloss straight onto that B.I.N. undercoat should've been ideal:cool:

Agree with lg bin should have stuck on glass ok, thing is it needs to cure before it gets scratchproof (8 days ?) Mind you I normally get away with using just gloss on cleaned glass. Did you apply during this cold weather?, condensation overnight? Not good conditions. Trick is next time, do not disturb too much, then in time it wil be a pig to remove ;)

I didn't know I had to let the BIN "cure" for 8 days. The tin says repaintable in 45 minutes. I repainted later the same day or the next day.

But, perhaps the condensation issue is a factor. The weather was very cold and I do get condensation on that window. Is there anything I can do to work around this? I'd like to redo it this week (weather is even colder).

Cheers.

Or, is there some better paint for use on glass? I know there are actual "glass paints" but these seem to be mostly translucent colours for stained glass effects. Would some of the craft paints like International Japlac or Plastikote work? These are available in white gloss too but I assume they're different from regular gloss paint (perhaps not oil based or something?).

any good trade undercoat / gloss is fine for window frames & overlapped about an 1/8" on the glass , so long as theyre dry!
just try removing a dried-on blob of pant from a pane and youll see just how well paint sticks to glass ! ;)

You dont need to wait 8 days to paint over the 'bin.' What I was infering is it should not b disturbed i.e. cleaned/rubbed etc.. jut a gentle de-nib if needed. Though as lw says normal gloss is the normal way to go. After painting leave it alone, and several days later it will be a pig to move ;) If your painting a sweating, single pane glass window in this weather it wont stick well anyway.. Try wiping the glass edge with meths. Meths being a quick solvent will take the damp away as it drys, giving you a few minutes to paint round the glass edge.

Good luck..

Thanks all I'll do it in better weather as the window sweating is too bad right now. I'll make sure the window is clean, do the meths thing and make sure I leave it for decent time before cleaning the window.

Cheers.
