Hi all, in the days of cellulose paint you could repair a small area of rust on a panel, spray the repair and you could then blend it into existing paint, my question is can this be done in the same way with modern metalic paint from a can, if so are there any differences. Thanks for your time.

The bad news is that metalic paint is very difficult to match, the good news is that there are several firms on line that will match your paint colour from your VIN number and put it in an aerosol can for not to much money. They also supply the lacquer so provided you feather the edges well you should be able to hide the join, but how good the match will be depends ....

There's a firm called paints4you (I think) which provide superb colour matches, either in aerosol cans or touch up pencils.
The problem is, the unavoidable overspray from the repair to the sound panel area will always be visible and slightly rough to the touch. Personally I've never had any real success with aerosols unless the complete (small) panel has been painted - but I guess thats just me!

It's an art form

If you approach it with the view to blend the paint in with the original, and apply lacquer to the complete panel.

But, its by no means easy and does not workout every time

Sometimes I say, why did I start this .............
