Hi all,
Could anyone advise me on the best method for taking paint off bannister's, etc, as i am taking it all back to the bare wood. I have had my doors dipped and they have come up very well when i have sanded and added a finishing wax to them. I have tried paint stripper, which works but it would take forever to complete. I have used a hot air gun, this again has worked but i do not want to burn the wood underneath because it still leaves a stain which needs to come off as well, so i have left it.

Any advice would be greatly received

thanks

Would you consider knocking the spindles out and replacing them mate?..its far easier sometimes and cheaper.

Thanks zampa for the reply.
Sounds very good advice mate but the there are two reasons why i would leave them in.

1. The colour
2. Age

When i took the doors back after being dipped i added a light beeswax (Fiddes Supreme Was Polish) to them and buffed them up. They came out great, due partly to the colour of the wood - Antique Pine and the fact that they are a hundred years old. If you infact mean take them out to dip and replace i see your point. If however you mean take them out completely and replace, i think i will battle on with stripping them for the time being - or until her in doors says otherwise - you know what the women folk are like. Someone told me of "Nitomors". Is that any good.

Thanks

I meant to add that bit actually..take them out and get them dipped..notromors os good gear but its hell of a job getting in all the moulde parts of the spindles..ive been to coutless jobs where people have started it and never finished it.

The bits at ground level are easily accesible..but once you start doing the higher stuff it becomes an absolute chore..personally if never bother myself.

If you take the spindles out youll be able to get to the underside of the rail and base plate far easier too
