Why do you think it has to be heat proof ? Most Fire surrounds would not get hot enough, no matter what fire was in it to do any harm to the paint.
That said it depends on what you want it to look like. I have done many with Dulux satinwood to good effect. A light sanding with some fine
wet'n' dry first.
