How can i access a window (from the outside :D ) for painting if there is a bay window directly underneath it ? The bay window roof is at a 45 degree angle (ish)

Will a normal ladder do - it would have to be at an angle of about 45 degrees or will a specialist ladder, like a conservatory ladder work ?

Cheers for any advice.

Not many people know this but a ladder is for taking you from A to B and in theory you shouldn't work off the ladder. Pop down to the hire shop as they have many scaffolding tower, youngman boards or lift etc. I rather have scaffolding as it's more comfortable and you can do the job better by taking your time.

The angle of the ladder should be 75 degree or 1:4 ( one out at the bottom and 4 up )

its actuallly true that a ladder is to get you from a to b, most do think it is to work at heights from, it is not a work platform, but a means of access

A very much fluated and hard to enforce rule though...ive always said that if this is to be adhered to then hire shops should make people sign a declaration stating how it is to be used....and diy sheds should stop selling them to members of the public.

The same with disc cutters....if a person has an accident on site with one theres hell to pay..and the HSE try and nick everyone they can (after the event of course)......but and fool can go into a shop and buy one.take it home and chop his hand off (or worse!)

Back to the original question...yes there are ways of getting around bay windows..but I have to go with the others here and advise some sort of scaffold or a tower...

I wouldnt bother myself.but then again im not scared of heights and im very aware of health and safety issues...but it wouldnt be professional to post shortcuts like that on here....sorry.

Mind you the way odmp are acting, soon a window cleaner will need scaffolding to clean bungalow windows!!! :

Well im all for health and saftey but done properly...

Sites now are having fire points set out all over the place....hard hats...hi vis jackets....boots......which is all well an good...then you look round and theres the brickies or a groundworker cutting slabs with a disc cutter...no mask google gloves ear deafenders....

How many sites insist or check that contractors equipment has been pat tested?

People need to look below the surface with health and saftey...not just the cosmetic things like fire points and hi vis jackets

The HSE's logo should be a horse bolting and someone closing the gate.....they come down and nick everyone after the event...citing the fact that the individuals or companies should have acted correctly in the first place...

But where is the guidence???.....note how many times the word 'should' crops up in h/s leterature and instruction...

Rules need to be black an white....not grey.

I once said to a HSE guy....'whats stopping me buying a JCB driving home with it....and causing no end of carnage'?....

Hes answer.....'you cant drive one without a licence'....

'Cant'???....I said....

"Well...shouldnt because you can be done for causing the damage"

Once again...shouldnt......thats not good enough....

The company must NOT have been able to sell me it in the first place....

A builders merchants or whoever..MUST NOT sell disc cutters to people without a competience card...etc

And did you know.....the health and safety laws are you only ones where you are guilty until proven innocent?
