Hi pros and DIYers alike. I suppose I had best start from the beginning, so please bear with me please. We have been renovating our semi for around 5 years now in our spare time and are now on bedroom number two. The walls and ceiling were originally wallpapered which we stripped off. The walls had plenty of dings and scratches which we filled and flatted. One wall and the ceiling had some serious cracks which we opened out and used some jointing mesh and easyfill to make good.
Our original plan was to emulsion all but I was concerned the bad cracks may come back, although unlikely as they appear old and the paper we took off was not cracked or broken either. Anyway, just to be safe, I decided to use lining paper first. The ceiling seemed to have some sort of pink coating on it which I have now discovered is probably distemper. So we lined the whole room, including ceiling, using paste the wall lining paper and paste.
So just the ceiling I am discussing from this point in. After lining we gave it a coat of emulsion and some seams became unstuck. Duly stuck them back down using the same paste and second coat of emulsion. Same result, some areas of the seams became unstuck, re-stick, re-coat, same result, Rinse and repeat. So by this time I figured out that the distemper, or whatever, was being reactivated by the moisture from the emulsion and hence the paper was becoming unstuck.
Next plan, use Zinzer BIN on the joints and around the edges to form a water proof barrier so hopefully the distemper would not become damp. Emulsioned again and still had to treat some spots, this time I used Evostick impact adhesive! There were other areas of seams I had to apply Easifil to to make good cracking in paint and gaps.
So still far from satisfactory and now I have another issue, once the emulsion has dried the ceiling has obvious darker stripes where the Ziner has been painted along the seams.
So, what to do. Any ideas how to salvage the situation or is it rip it all off, remove/seal the distemper and start again? Sorry about the long tale of woe.
