Hi everyone
We’ve got new spindles, handrails and newel posts being installed and I’ve read some other helpful threads here but had a couple of questions please.
- The wood is bare (pine I believe) and we’re going to paint it. We’ve got Johnstone’s joncryl water based primer undercoat but do we need to do anything else like a treatment for knots first?
- do we need to sand before or after priming at all? Would rather not if we can get away with it!

We are also going to paint the old staircase before installing a runner. Once we’ve sanded that down, is there a particular set of products we should use that’s very hard wearing and ideally lower Sheen paint. Again do we need to sand between coats?

Thank you!
