Hi, never painted before as since moving to this country I have lived in rented houses.

I have an old staircase which is yellowish white and I suspect previous owner used oil based gloss.

I just saw a post here about someone having some problems and I wanted to ask for some advice.

I wanted to put johnstones satinwood on top. I will sand it lightly and then should I put a undercoat and then satinwood top coat. What undercoat to use? I have seen zinsser BIN mentioned few times but not sure as to if that will work as undercoat?

What brush shall I use?

I know these are basic questions but I would rather ask than doing a horrible job...
