Painting over satin wood gloss

Hi All.

My dad kindly offered to paint the interior of my boat which i have just recently clad in ply. I was after a matt emulsion finish on the ply and was quite specific about this. Unfortunately it's been painted in gloss!! It's obviously left a thick looking shiny finish which i don't like.

Will I be ok to sand over and then paint in emulsion or is there more too it than that.

Any suggestions and advice please.

Best bet is to sand it back a bit then paint it with oil based eggshell. Thin the paint a little and you'll have no probs.

Will egg shell give me a matt finish? What should I thin it down with?

If its oil base dthen you thin it down with white spirit..

Eggshell isnt as shiny than satin but more shinier than matt.

If you want a matt finnish on your woodwork id suggest adding a matting agent (bollom paints used to make one) or the esier solution...using a flat oil finish

Eggshell gets 'matter' over a period of weeks. It's far tougher than emulsion and being as you are painting over oil based gloss - it's a far safer bet than a water based (emulsion) paint which may well peel over new gloss.
