Hi

I'm painting by son's bedroom, he currently has silk on his walls. I know painting matt over silk is a bit troublesome so I'm using soft sheen. However I've done 1 coat and it looks very patchy.

Is it ok to paint soft sheen straight over silk? Should I have rubbed it down or used a primer?

Thanks

Adam

I'm assuming you are using a vinyl paint and as such it would not make any difference whether it was a matt vinyl or a soft sheen vinyl. The troublesome bit is where cheap paint or contract emulsions are used improperly. Contract/Cover matt emulsions are for bare plaster/plasterboard walls etc not to paint over a vinyl emulsion.

patchiness can be several things, too thin a coat and brushed rolled out too much, cheap thin paint and poor equipment. Soft sheen and silk paints are translucent not opaque and I paint a base coat of the same colour in matt prior to a soft sheen or silk finish vinyl paint.
