Hi Folks,

Looking for some opinions ....

Considering a small extension, probably wood clad.

In order to keep costs down we're keen to do the less technical jobs ourselves (thinking electric first fix, plaster boarding but not plastering, exterior cladding, tiling, interior painting etc) and pay a builder or appropriate subbies for the stuff I can't do (drains, slab, frame, windows, roof).

Ideally looking to learn some more skills along the way. Mechanic to trade, reasonably competent DIYer (fitted 3 kitchens, 2 bathrooms, moved some partition walls, spent 6 months labouring for a sparkle, able to cut a piece of wood with a handsaw)

Is this something a builder would consider taking on??

Thanks

Usual way is for the builder to build the shell. Then you do everything inside. If you want contractors to do bits inside such as plastering just employ them as required.

You can employ various subcontractors to do the shell if you want, but its easier to lose control of the costs. With a main contractor you get a single quote for the shell - nice and clean.

It would only get in a fiddle if you want the main contractor to do various bits whilst you try to do others and you get under each others feet.

Simon.
