my '95 passat 2L had a problem with the engine revving on its own.A new potentiometer sorted this out along with a good clean.Now the bloody thing cuts out now and again when coming to a halt.I've checked for air leaks found one put it right but still the same.AAGHH!!!

Sounds like the ISV.
Sits on top of the valve cover with a couple of roughly 1" diameter rubber breather pipes and a multi pin plug on it.
If you take it off and clean it out with come carb cleaner or petrol, all should be fine........... if not come back and i'll have another guess!
